In this Dutch language volume (1995) Prelude to a New Century. Episodes from the Dutch fin de siècle I wrote the chapter Waiting for Television about the invention of film and the reactions to it in the Netherlands. In the first two decades of the new medium of the two main streams of the new medium – illusion and documentary ‘reality’ – the representation of mostly nationalistic reality was the most popular in the expanding cinematic experience: royalty and colonialism, including the colonial wars.
